The UK spends around £1.6bn on gifts to mark Valentine’s Day. That’s roughly £45 per person and a significant proportion of that is spent on the ‘food of love’ – confectionery.
That’s great news for us and great news for retailers, that is, as long as we are all well prepared to make the most of what is a very welcome opportunity to boost revenue after the busy Christmas period.
Valentine’s stock should be in place from New Year’s Day onwards. It is helpful if customers can see the merchandise as soon as they walk into the shop and we advise to keep the seasonal display well organised and well stocked through the season. Some retailers like to have a designated in store ‘seasonal space’ so that regular customers will come to know where to look for that special gift.
We suggest stocking a range of gifting lines across all price points, to suit all budgets, from premium boxed chocolates to fun novelty items, taking into account the intended target audience.
